A Mother’s Lullaby

Bittersweet ain’t either of those things
When the pill is pride you’re swallowing down
A fire escape made of wood is bound to break
When the flames decide to finally take you out

But we do what we have to do
To keep us fed; to keep us warm; to get us through
Some may say that it’s just an excuse
But everyone of them is guilty, too

Momma’s grave may not seem the perfect place,
But it’s where I go to find the answers now
A tragedy turned into a legacy
When the family name was finally handed down
And my baby son saved me from myself

So I’ll do what I have to do
To keep him fed; to keep him warm; to get us through
Some may say that it’s just an excuse
But everyone of them is guilty, too
Everyone including me and you
